Fly Casting World Championships 2018

Dear Fly Casting Friends

It was a great pleasure to organise and run the 2018 Fly Casting World Championships.
At the height of registration there was 123 athletes confirmed from 20 nations, this made for potentially the largest Fly Casting Competition in living history.

The championships was officially opened on Thursday 16th August at 5pm by Mr Thorgeir Gustavsen once every caster and official was on site.
During Thursdays training period prior to the opening ceremony everyone was casting huge distances and spirits were very high.

On the morning of Friday 17th August, the tournament began at 7.45am  with the national captains leading their team onto the Overhead Casting Area whilst carrying their national flag. Once all the teams were in line, the sounding of a whistle was to herald the beginning of a One Minute Silence to remember friends Ian May and John Donegan who had recently passed away, both men did and were to continue to play large roles in this championships.

The wind tore through the flags during this silence and the emotion felt set the stage for what was about to become the best WC tournament thus far.

During the next three days there was no fewer than 8 World Records broken, 21 National Records broken and 50 Personal Best casts achieved by a minimum of 31 casters.
These figures of achievement are actually still coming in, however what this goes to show is that the Port Haverigg  World Championships of 2018 was the fairest tournament to date where everyone had stable wind to work with.

Well done and a huge Thank You to all the competitors, judges and everyone else who helped to make the tournament a huge success. Also we wish to extend a huge thanks to your hosts Wyldecrest Parks for doubling the amount of hire fleet on site to accommodate all the casters in time for the tournament and for providing both comfort and convenience with their competitive on site stay package which came in conjunction with all the hard working staff at The Ski Bar who worked tirelessly to feed the casters.

Furthermore to the rest of our Sponsors pictured below and including Mr Peter Anderson and Henry McLaughlin from Scotland, we say a Huge Thank You for supporting this historic event.
